Thanks, Mrs. Evans!

It’s great seeing our Amelia campers! Â Yes, the ice chunks were crazy, but Amelia is made of tougher stuff than ice.
Check out Mrs. Evan’s 5th Grade blog for some great pictures, and a short description of their stay at Kern!

Here is an interesting article regarding making accommodations for people who share a public place, and where the limits should be placed while doing so.
At Camp Kern, we’re pretty proud of the fact that we don’t have Peanuts and tree nuts on site. Â We think it’s a great way to accommodate campers who have allergies, but also to teach the rest of our camper population how to be compassionate and understanding of differences.
Many other camp directors are amazed that we don’t have peanut-butter, peanut snacks, peanut-butter cookies, etc. Â They ask, “Don’t your kids go crazy without peanut-butter and jelly at every meal?!?!?” It’s great that we can honestly answer that no, our campers do not. Â First, the camp’s food is great! Â There are tons of options on the salad bar, and there are always multiple options for each meal. Â It’s hard to go hungry at camp. Â And second, we teach all our campers that peanuts can actually be dangerous to a small group of people with a specific allergy, and that we want everyone to have the ability to come to camp.
So, what do you think? Â Do you appreciate that Camp Kern makes accommodations for allergies? Â We are soon beginning to offer a Gluten-free menu for those with gluten restrictions, is that something you have wanted for a while?

This year’s Harry Potter Camp is filling up quick!
Come join us for Harry Potter Residential Camp this summer. Â We will be exploring events and themes from the entire HP series, from being admitted to Hogwarts to the Sorting Hat ceremony, all the way through Gringotts and Voldemort.
All the counselors at Kern love this story. Â Adventure, friends, learning and trying to do the right thing are such great messages to build a story around. Â Hopefully, you’ll do all these things at Kern as well!

As has been reported in LOTS of media outlets over the last days, Camp Kern has won a court case intended to stop the expansion of our educational, non-profit Ozone Zipline Adventures. Â This educational zipline has done worlds of good for both the YMCA and Warren County in general. Â We are excited to pursue the expansion, draw more people outdoors, and show off our section of the Little Miami River Valley.
If you’re interested in more information about Ozone Ziplines, find all the details and booking information at www.ozonezips.org.

Thanks to Mr. Kesling’s annual gift to Camp Kern, we have so far this year purchased NEW keyboards, mice, and 22 inch flat screen monitors for the media center! Combined with our Mac Mini computers and great digital cameras, this is a wonderful addition to the Camp Kern activity areas.
This summer, campers will continue to learn to take great outdoor photos, record radio shows, and create fun movies. Remember to pack your creativity right next to your sunscreen this summer!

Today, camp kern is talking with lots of families from GE in cincinnati! If you’re working at GE, come on over and say hi!
If you’d like Kern to visit your business, just email mcostlow@daytonymca.org, and we’ll come talk to your office. If you’d rather just get a bunch of brochures to pass around the water cooler, we can do that too.
We can’t wait to host students from Greenview HS here at Camp Kern! Â It’s going to be a blast. Â The cabins are shiny clean and ready for some serious fun.

Camp Kern campers saved Easter today. The Golden Egg, entrusted to the Easter bunny each year for safekeeping, had been stolen by Big Angus and his leprechaun friends. The campers of Spring Camp all rallied together to gather and earn enough gold to buy it back from Angus (everyone knows it’s impossible to steal from a leprechaun…)
Despite Angus’ last-minute treachery, the Golden Egg was finally rescued.
And promptly eaten by hungry campers.
The evening wrapped up with a cobbling lesson from the leprechauns, followed by an anti-rain Dance.
Overall, a completely fun Spring Camp day!
